THE VOLUNTEERS

01

A literary exploration of the Russo-Ukraine war, grounded in the true stories of those who chose to serve.

The novel examines the psychological toll of war through a lens of restraint and adult realism.

02

It is not a patriotic tale, nor a sentimental narrative, but a serious literary fiction that seeks to understand the true cost of service.

03

Based on true stories from both sides, the narrative is a restrained, journalistic account of the human cost and the complex moral landscape of modern conflict.

One went for money. One went for the idea. Neither expected what he found. The Volunteers moves between a Russian contract soldier and an American volunteer in the Ukrainian ranks, tracking the same war from both ends of it — the recruitment line, the training, the friendships, the cost.

Mathew Dubron didn't write this from a desk. He went to the recruitment centers — in Moscow and in Kyiv — and interviewed men who had been to the front. He wanted primary sources, not a version of the war assembled from footage. What he found became this book.
